DaVinci Faire

"Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Being willing is not enough; we must do."

Grasping a practical knowledge of the fundamentals of science, invention, and engineering is more essential today than ever before. Participation in the Da Vinci Faire is a great way to develop those skills.

The knowledge, inquiry, and engineering portion of the Da Vinci Faire consist of three different categories:   

1. SCIENCE INQUIRY:  choose a wonderment your child is interested in.  Take it through the scientific process, inquiring, hypothesizing, creating an experiment, testing the experiment, analyzing the results, and then coming to a conclusion.  Display this process on a display board.

2. ENGINEERING DESIGN:  Like creative thought, this category will solve a problem.  Is your child interested in bridges, windmills, catapults, paper airplanes, rockets?  Have him/her research different ways to solve the problem being addressed in the design. Talk about the criteria and constraints of the design.  Design a solution to the problem and create a model.  Test the capabilities of the design.  Analyze the outcome. Then create a display board to inform the judges.

3. SCIENCE KNOWLEDGE:  Maybe your child is interested in a scientific idea such as the solar system, the periodic table, volcanoes, plate tectonics, etc. It would be hard to come up with an experiment, so have her/him create a model.  Then display all of the knowledge s/he has acquired through research on a display board.

Some classes will be presenting group investigations or engineering tasks.  They will be displayed so that parents can see them, but they will not be awarded a ribbon.  Only individual investigations, engineering tasks, or science knowledge displays will be awarded ribbons.  

All entries will be subject to the following rules and guidelines:

1.  The most important ingredients are the work accomplished, the knowledge acquired, and how the knowledge is displayed so that others may learn.

2.  Although it is the student's effort, there is no substitute for a parent's support.


4.  Use animals for observations only, not as experiments.  Keep in mind humanitarian ideals.

5.  Learn something new.  Research, observation procedures, and investigations are all important steps to understanding.

6.  Remember this quote:  "Just because something doesn't do what you planned it to do doesn't mean it's useless." ~Thomas A. Edison      How does the outcome change your knowledge?

7.  Each entry needs to include a display board that is organized so the judges can easily understand what the question or problem was, the materials used, the procedure, the data and results, the conclusion and future wonderings.  The display board should not be flat because it needs to stand up.  Please see attached for ideas on how to organize your display board.  

The art portion of the DaVinci Faire will consist partly of artwork created by students in their classroom.  This artwork will be on display in the halls.  Artistic students may also enter artwork they have done at home.  This artwork will be displayed in the gym on a special table and awarded ribbons.  The artwork should show that time and effort were put into the piece of art, and it should be ready for display.

Students need to bring their display boards and projects to school on Thursday, April 5th.  All projects NEED TO BE AT SCHOOL BY 12:30.  They will be set up after lunch.  Classes will then tour the Faire from 1:00-2:20 PM.  (There will be time from 2:30-3:15 for parents to come and help set up displays if you cannot come before school.) The gym will be closed for judging from 3:30-5:30 PM.  The Da Vinci Faire will begin at 5:30 PM, lasting until 7:30 PM.  Students may take their project home at the conclusion of the Faire, 7:30 PM.  All projects are to be picked up by Friday, April 6, 8:00 AM.

Please complete the registration and return it to Central School office by Monday, April 2, 2018.

"Scene's from a past Da Vinci Faire" - Spring of 2015: 

Central’s gym was filled with science, engineering and art on March 19, 2015.  

The 4th Annual Da Vinci Faire opened with approximately 100 science, engineering, and invention projects laid out on the tables.  This year, students were also able to enter an art project, too.  Paintings, drawings, and scale ships were entered.  In one corner, Prevailing Winds, a Renaissance recorder group filled the background with music. 

Principal Mayes, dressed as daVinci toured the displays, chatting with students and families. At one end of the gym, the PTA was selling baked items to munch on while pondering the displays. Volcanoes erupted outside, while roller coasters rumbled in the gym.  
At 7:00pm, the EOU Chemistry Club began their Magic Show with the audience ooo-ing and ahh-ing.  

Out in the hallways, art pieces from all of Central’s students were displayed. 

Finally, in the library, Mrs. Trisler and Mr. Wing presented the Central’s Spring Book Fair.  It was quite the evening and was well attended by students, families, 
and staff!
